A new mutagenicity detection method for gaseous compounds was developed and applied to vinylidene chloride, vinyl chloride and ethyl chloride. Several bacterial strains were exposed to a gas for 1, 3 and 48 hours under S9mix condition. Vinylidene chloride showed mutagenicity for the base pair type strains, but did not show mutagenicity for the frame shift type strains on 1 hour exposure. A prominently high mutagenicity was observed for theE. coliWP2uvrA/pKM101 strain. No mutagenicity was observed for any strains without the S9mix. This method showed good reproducibility with the variation factors of less than 9.1%. When the strains were exposed to gases for 48 hours, vinylidene chloride showed higher mutagenicity than vinyl chloride. A chlorinated alkane, ethyl chloride, showed no mutagenicity under the same condition.
