The volatile organic compounds in air (city and residential area) and water (sea and rivers) were identified by gas chromatography mass spectrometry (GC/MS) . Air samples were collected on Tenax TA adsorbents. Water samples were treated by a purge & trap apparatus to collect volatile organic compounds on the same adsorbents. The adsorbates were introduced into GC MS by a thermal desorption cold trap injector for identification.<BR>More than hundred of compounds were identified in air and water samples. The composition of alkyl (C3-C6) benzene isomers showed the good similarity in both samples. As for the composition of dichlorobenzene isomers, the main component was ρ-isomer in air (ratio of ρ-isomer to the total ones was more than 80%), but ratio of o-isomer was increased to 50% or more in water. Sulfides (dimethyl sulfide etc.) and iodine compounds (diiodomethane etc.) in water were originated from the natural resources.<BR>These results suggest that the volatile organic compounds are widely distributed and equilibrated between atmosphere and aqueous layer.
