Leachates from landfills C and D were subjected to freeze-vacuum distillation. Distillates were analyzed by gas chromatography / mass spectrometry. Characteristic components in both leachates were aliphatic alcohols, fatty acids, carboxylic acids bearing benzene ring, phenols, and indoles. Since these compounds were usually detected in manure or sewage sludge, sewage sludge might to be burned both in landfills C and D. Chemical components in landfill D were divided into five fractions and mutagenicity and each fraction was studied by Ames' test. As a result, mutagenicity was clearly observed in two fractions. Leachate from landfill E, where waste plastics are burned, was extracted with dichloromethane and extracts were analyzed by gas chromatogrophy / mass spectrometry. Several additives in plastics were observed in landfill E.
