Evaluation of the Removal of Synthetic Organic Chemical by Activated Carbon Adsorption using UV Absorbance of Natural Organic Matter as a Rapid Surrogate Parameter

Detection of various types of hazardous organic compounds needs the use of expensive analytical tools such as gas chromatography/mass spectrometry and liquid chromatography /mass spectrometry which require hours to days to provide the results. Since naturally occurring UV active components for natural organic matter (NOM) are commonly present in almost all source waters for water supply and can be rapidly and inexpensively monitored by UV absorbance of NOM at 260 nm (E260) . Batch and fixed bed adsorption tests for finding the correlation between the removal of E260 and the removal of target synthetic organic chemical (SOC) by activated carbon adsorption were investigated. Activated carbon unadsorbable NOM fraction were well estimated by use of dissolved organic carbon to E260 of the source water (DOC/E260) . Percentage removals of E260 were well correlated to those of SOC in the batch test. Almost 100 % removal of SOCs was possible when around 50 % background E260 removal was achieved independent of the initial SOC concentration investigated in this research. In the mini column test with fixed bed, SOC breakthrough (C/C<SUB>0</SUB>=0.1) occurred near the midpoint of NOM breakthrough (C/C<SUB>0</SUB>=0.4-0.5) regardless of the difference in initial SOC concentration level (C0=61 mg/<I>l</I>and C<SUB>0</SUB>=122 mg/<I>l</I>) and throughput bed volume 920 (raw water volume treated m<SUP>3</SUP>/activated carbon volume m<SUP>3</SUP>) for C<SUB>0</SUB>=61 mg/<I>l</I>and 1720 (raw water volume treated m<SUP>3</SUP>/activated carbon volume m<SUP>3</SUP>) for C<SUB>0</SUB>=122 mg/<I>l</I>, respectively. These results suggested that UV absorbance of NOM could be an effective surrogate parameter for evaluation of SOC removal by activated carbon adsorption.
