Four types of vegetable soil amendment, two types of commercial leaf mold product, and a natural leaf mold were investigated for mutagenicity. Methanol extracts of these samples were subjected to mutagenicity tests usingS. typhimuriumTA98, TA100, YG1024, and YG1029 strains by the preincubation method. Since commercial nitrohumic acid standards and a soil amendment product showed higher mutagenicity in YG-type strains than in TA-type strains, these samples should contain low molecular weight nitro compounds. All samples showed mutagenicity under any test conditions, especially in the tests using YG-type strains. These results suggested that vegetable soil amendments and natural leaf mold might contain pseudonitro compounds which are contained in nitrohumic acids.
