We tried to oxidatively degrade bisphenol A (BPA) by horseradish (<I>Armoracia rusticana</I>) peroxidase (HRP) with linoleic acid hydroperoxide (LAHPO) instead of hydrogen peroxide. In the presence of HRP and LAHPO, 98% of BPA was degraded after 1h at 40°C. The major oxidation products of BPA were high molecular weight of polymers, while a few 4-isopropenylphenol was produced. When the estrogen-like activity of oxidized BPA was examined by the method using the estrogen-dependent human breast cancer cell (MCF-7), no such activity was observed. It was suggested that LAHPO was an effective oxidant for BPA oxidation by HRP and that HRP and LAHPO could be useful for inactivation of endocrinedisrupting BPA contaminated in food and feeds.
