Size Distribution and Seasonal Variations in Concentrations of 1-Nitropyrene and Polycyclic Aromatic Hydrocarbons in Atmospheric Particulate Matter.

Size distributions and seasonal variations in concentrations of 1-nitropyrene (1-NP) and 9 polycyclic aromatic hydrocarbons (PAHs) in atmospheric particulate matter collected by an Andersen high-volume air sampler were examined. Measurements were performed in the period from July to August 2001 (summer) and from January to February 2002 (winter) . 1-NP and PAHs were analyzed by liquid chromatography with tandem mass spectrometry and gas chromatography with mass spectrometry, respectively. Concentrations of 1-NP and PAHs in winter were much higher than those in summer (1-NP: 4.17 pg/m3 in summer, 30.2 pg/m3 in winter, total PAHs: 1.44 ng/m3 in summer, 5.27 ng/m3 in winter) . On the other hand, particle size distributions of 1-NP and PAHs did not show changes between summer and winter. Approximately 80 % of 1-NP and 70-80 % of total PAHs were present in the particles smaller than 1.1 μ m diameter.
