This paper set forth data on the electron microscopic structure of the utricle and saccule. The results obtained have been compared with the data of the utricle and saccule in the normal rabbits emerging from extensive research with the electron microscope observations. The electron microscopic demonstration of the morphology of the otolithic organ were made and the results were as follows:<BR>1) The sensory cells in the macula of the otolithic organ were composed of two kinds of flash-, and oval-shaped one.<BR>2) The distribution of the hair cells of two kinds were different from at the central and at the peripheral portion in the macula.<BR>Flash-shaped cells dominated over in the central portion, oval-shaped cells in peripheral portion of the macula.<BR>3) The otolith, coverd by the otolithic membrane was osmophilic dense, but did not seen the crystalization.<BR>4) The hair bundles on each cells were formed of one kinocilium (similar to the kinocilia in the respiratory pathways)and 50-80 stereocilia, and the tips of these cilia end in the otolithic membrane.<BR>5) The kinocilia are always found on the same side of each hair bundles.<BR>6) In the hair cells of utricular macula, endplasmic reticulum had usually form of regular cisternae with a diameter of 3×0.25μ in parallel arrangment beside or below the nucleus. In the hair cells of saccular macula, endplasmic reticulum had the form of large cisternae with a diameter of 2×0.4μ in parallel arrangment only below the nucleus.<BR>7) The nerve endings pattern of flash-, and oval-shaped cells had been precisly to deter mine, i, e. flash-shaped cells had a larg nerve chalice(postsynaptic endings)encircling nearly entire sensory cell, and the nerve endings with the synaptic vesicle (presynaptic endings) were visible adjencent to the nerve chalice. Oval shaped-cells of the macular utriculi and sacculi were innervated by clearly vesiculated (presynaptic endings)and non-vesiculated (postsynaptic endings) nerve endings as well as flash-shaped cells, but these were in contact with the plasma membrane of oval-shaped cells. Postsynaptic endings wholly had low density, however presynaptic endings had both small mitochondria and a small number of rounded granules with a diameter of from 200 to 250 Å.<BR>8) The cytoplasm on the extra macular portion of the utricule and the saccule contained granula, mitochondria and an amount of the smooth surface endplasmic reticulum.<BR>9) Near the surface of the surporting cells, there are well developed reticulum lamina, and terminal bar.
