A 72-year-old woman complaining of severe pharyngeal pain was admitted to our hospital. A physical examination revealed auricular herpetic vesicles, oral and laryngeal herpetic lesions, a disordered sense of taste, and hypesthesia of the right cheek. The patient rapidly improved after acyclovir treatment. It was felt that herpes zoster oticus might have originated in the V, IX and X cranial nerves
