<I>In 1969, Edwards and Hayes reported that carrier-free</I> 67Ga-<I>citrate exhibited marked uptake in malignant tumors. Since then, many tumor-scanning agents have been proposed for the scintigraphic detection of cancer. However, as yet, success has been limited.</I><BR>57Co-<I>bleomycin has recently been introduced by Nouel and Kono for detecting the localization and extent of tumors in humans. It is apparent from the scintigram of a case of lung cancer (Fig. 1) that the tissue distribution of</I> 67Ga-<I>citrate and</I> 57Co-<I>bleomycin is different. Although</I> 57Co-<I>bleomycin showed greater tumor specificity in this clinical case, exact comparison is impossible for the examinations were performed one month apart. The purpose of this paper is to report the comparison of in vivo concentration in tumor of</I> 67Ga-<I>citrate and</I> 57Co-<I>bleomycin using a</I> Ge (Li) <I>semiconductor detector. This method made it possible to detect</I> 67Ga <I>and</I> 57Co <I>simultaneously and to estimate their relative uptakes, and thus minimize the differences due to individual variations.</I><BR><I>The accumulation of</I> 67Ga-<I>citrate in metastatic lymph node of patients with lung, breast cancer and reticulosarcoma was 4-20 times higher than that of</I> 57Co-<I>bleomycin. Especially, the accumulation of</I> 67Ga-<I>citrate in reticulosarcoma was remarkably higher than that of</I> 57Co-<I>bleomycin. The accumulation of</I> 67Ga-<I>citrate in normal liver was 24 times higher than that of</I> 57Co-<I>bleomycin. These results were the same as those obtained by the animal experiments. After treatment of</I> 60Co <I>radiation therapy (7000 R), the accumulation of</I> 67Ga-<I>citrate in lung cancer strongly decreased, whereas that of</I> 57Co-<I>bleomycin not so much decreased. The method used in this study is a new application of a semiconductor detector in nuclear medicine.</I>
