Thirty-seven children with acute lymphoblastic leukemia (ALL) or non-Hodgkin's lymphoma (NHL) associated with high-risk features underwent a total of 42 peripheral blood stem cell autografts (PBSCT). Eighteen patients underwent PBSCT in the first complete remission (1st CR), 13 in the second CR (2nd CR), 5 in the third or fourth CR (advanced CR), and 6 patients underwent PBSCT at relapse. We evaluated the prognosis of 24 patients who developed relapse after PBSCT ; of which 9 patients were successfully reinduced CR by subsequent chemotherapy. However, at present only 3 patients are maintaining CR. The data suggest that long-term survival is a rare event in patients who relapsed after PBSCT.
