We experienced two cases of transient pure red cell aplasia (TPRCA) following viral infections. Case 1, a 5-year-old boy, came to our hospital with complaints of petechiae and nasal bleeding. He had leukopenia and thrombocytopenia in peripheral blood, prominent erythroid hypoplasia and giant proerythroblast-like cells in the bone marrow. The number of BFU-E was markedly decreased in the bone marrow blood. Subsequently, his bone marrow became hypoplastic, but after 2 months follow-up, it recovered spontaneously. Case 2, a 9-year-old girl came to our hospital with the same complaints. Her WBC count was decreased to 960/μl, and her platelet count was 5.0 × 104/μl. No erythroid cells were present in her bone marrow smears, so we could not calculate the M : E ratio. We did, however, observe giant proerythroblast-like cells in the smears. On follow up examinations, EB virus titers were high in Case 1 and the RS virus titer had increased in Case 2. Finally, we made a diagnosis of transient PRCA induced by viral infections in both cases.
