The 2048×2048 (2k) matrix II-TV digital radiography (DR) system has been introduced for GI-tract examinations. It was found in our previous study that the image quality of this DR system is sufficient for applying it to accurate GI-tract examinations. However, the amount of image data is so large that the 2k-matrix mode could not employ for the mass screening. Therefore, in this study, we investigated on introducing the image compression and 1024×1024 (1k) matrix mode. It was found that the presampling MTFs for 2k-matrix mode are comparable to those for 1k-matrix mode at low frequencies. The receiver operating characteristic (ROC) analysis for the detectability of low contrast objects indicates that the image obtained with 1k-matrix mode at 7″ II provides the same detectability to the screen/film system (HR6/HRS), and that the image obtained with less the 1/20 compression at 1k-matrix mode provides similar detectability to the noncompressed images. As a result of observer performance test, it is not distinguishable between the clinical compressed images obtained with compression ratio less than 1/18 and noncompressed images. It was concluded that the DR system at 1k-matrix mode with image compression technique can be applicable to GI-tracts mass screening.
