Effect of herbicides on the growth of phasey bean (<I>Macroptilium Lathyroides</I> (L.) Urb.) in waterlogging condition

This study was conducted to investigate the growth of phases bean (<I>Macroptilium lathyroides</I> (L.) Urb.) as affected by twenty two herbicides in the waterlogging pot experiment, on the assumption that herbicide solutions flow from rice paddy field into adjacent paddy or upland paddy field used for phasey bean cultivation. The herbi cide was put into the waterlogged phasey bean pot at 20th day after germination (Exp. 1, twenty two herbicides) and 7th day after germination (Exp. 2, sixteen herbicides) . Plant length, leaf, stem and root dry matter weights tended to decrease by four herbicides treatments in Exp. 1. In six herbicides treatments, abnormal branching and/or dwarfed leaves were observed. In sixteen herbicides treatments, total plant weight showed similar or higher values compared with control (no herbicide treatment) . In the Exp. 2, one herbicide significantly (p <0.05) decreased the plant weight, and nine herbicides treatments tended to depress the growth. In seven herbicides treatments, abnormal branching was observed. In four herbicides treatments there were tended to be increases in plant weight.
