In recent years, supercritical fluids have received much attention in the field of separation techniques such as extraction, oil recovery, chromatography, etc. The essential features of the fluids which favor their use in the applications are: firstly their densities depend strongly on pressure and temperature near the critical point and secondly their transport properties (i. e. low viscosity and moderate mass diffusivity) are more favorable for mass transfer than those of liquids. In this review, we will briefly describe some physical properties of supercritical fluids and the current situation of the technical applications. The description is further given for the principal types of phase behavior and the theoretical considerations of phase equilibria associated with supercritical fluid extraction.
