A high pressure apparatus, which consisted of a bucket and outer case in contact to each other with a tapered surface, was developed. During high pressure generation, control of the supporting pressure on the core was possible by adjustment of the bucket stroke into the outer case. Strengthening characteristics of this apparatus were examined using a steel core with wire resistance strain gages. The results obtained, which gave instructions for operation and design for this apparatus, are as follows; 1) Owing to the sliding friction force, the relation between the supporting force and the stroke of the bucket showed hysteresis. 2) Strains at the inner surface of the core had the maximum value at an early stage of decreasing process of the supporting force. 3) The core and the bucket were deformed into the hand drum shape by applying the supporting force. Circumferential and axial strains were negative and positive, respectively. 4) Both of the taper angle and the ratio of the inner diameter to the outer diameter of the bucket influenced on distribution of the contact pressure between the outer case and the bucket.
