Tensile strength and apparent deformation of solidifying Al-2-20%Cu and Al-2-7%Si alloy castings were determined by use of a tensile test apparatus newly designed. The alloys complete solidification through four stages with lapse of time. The alloys in stage I fail out of the final solidification zone of specimen. Those in stage II rapidly lower the deformation. Those in stage III minimize the deformation and noticeable strength. And those in stage IV show rapid increase both of deformation and strength. Crystallization of eutectic has no effect on the change of deformation and strength through solidification. When the alloy contains more of solute, strengthening delays and the apparents deformation increases. The grain refined alloy has high deformation. Generation of microcracks at dendrite interfaces and their propagation are dominant factors govering deformation. They also depend on such structural variables as fraction solid, grain size and cell size in solidifying alloys.
