GPS (Global Positioning System) receiver antennas for surveying are tested in a radio anechoic chamber to examine their phase characteristics for precise geodetic ap plications. The phase delay pattern of each antenna is measured as a function of elevation and azimuth angles of incident radio waves. Those of the same antenna models agree within a 5 mm peak-to-peak difference. The phase center corresponding to each elevation angle moves by several cm as the elevation angle changes. The positions of mean phase centers averages over the upper hemisphere are also calculated. The variation of the phase center around its mean degrades baseline accuracy even if the same models of antenna are oriented to the same direction, since the phase characteristics of the antennas are not flat with azimuth and elevation.
