The level of the low molecular weight protein β2-microglobulin was measured by a radioimmunoassay method in serum and urine of normal pregnancies and of pregnancies complicated by toxemia or chronic nephritis. In normal subjects the levels of serum, β2-microglobulin did not elevate during pregnancy while those of urinary β2-microglobulin increased in proportion to a period of pregnancy and urine from subjects in the last trimester contained about two times higher than that in the first trimester. In patients with toxemia in a late pregnancy, the levels of serum β2-microglobulin exhibited a significant elevation and also those of the urinary β2-microglobulin were slightly higher than those in normal subjects for the comparable period. There was a statistical correlation between serum β2-microglobulin levels and creatinine clearance (p<0.01). These results suggest that further studies of, β2-microglobulin may lead to useful informa-tion about renal function in pregnancies complicated with toxemia and nephropathy.
