Seasonal Variation and Characterization of Organic Compounds in Water Samples of the four Rivers in Akita Prefecture.

Organic compounds in the waters of Yoneshiro, Omono, Koyoshi and Asahi rivers of Akita Prefecture were analyzed by GC/MS in order to elucidate the characteristics and seasonal variation.<BR>83 kinds of organic compounds, i.e. fatty acids, alcohols, aldehydes, aliphatic hydrocarbons, esters, pesticides and plasticizers etc., were identified in those samples. The total percentage of aliphatic hydrocarbon, pesticide, plasticizer and alcohol was more than 70% of the total identified organic compounds. Relative intensities of <I>n</I>-alkanes (C12-C31) increased at the middle and lower sampling points in most of the four rivers in autumn and winter. Pesticides (herbicides, fungicides and insecticides) were mainly detected at the middle and lower sampling points in the four rivers in spring and summer. These results indicated that <I>n</I>-alkanes (C12-C31) were related with artificial source such as kerosene, gas oil etc.. And then, pesticides should be due to those applied for paddy fields. On the other hand, dibutyl phthalate and di-2-ethylhexyl phthalate were present in all the samples with higher intensities than those of any other compounds.<BR>Organic compounds identified in the four rivers were almost the same kinds. It is suggested that various organic compounds present in the river waters are similar in the four river basins of Akita Prefecture.
