Two interlaboratory tests on the analysis of trihalomethanes (THMs) in water were conducted, and the results were analyzed statistically in order to identify occurrence and source of biases among results by different analytical methods. Samples were made by adding known amounts of THMs in reagent-grade water, in a river water and in an artificial sea water in the first, and a tap water was used as a sample in the second test. Purge and trap (P&T) method, headspace (HS) method or hexane extraction method was used as a pretreatment method, and mass spectrometer (MS), electron capture detector or flame ionization detector was used as a detector of gas chromatograph. The following results were obtained.
(1) The results of chloroform were found to be not reliable even after the blank correction when blank levels were high because of the occurrence of indoor contamination during pretreatment.
(2) The sensitivities of four MS by three makers used in the present study showed tendencies to decrease with time. These decrease tendencies were able to be corrected by using internal standard method.
(3) When P&T method was employed, the results obtained by calibration curve method were consistently lower than the results by internal standard method. This is apparently caused by the decrease of the sensitivity of MS (see (2) ) during the analysis of samples. The results by the internal standard method, however, tended to vary considerably probably because of the variation of the quantity of added standard in each sample.
(4) In both HS and P&T methods, THMs recoveries were higher when the salt concentrations in the solution were higher. It is necessary to saturate both samples and standards with sodium chloride to get reliable data.
(5) The results for some THMs obtained by hexane extraction method were consistently lower than the results by the other methods because of low extraction efficiencies of these compounds in hexane layer. It is necessary to include hexane extraction step in the making procedure of calibration curve.
