The structure and formulation are described of a river modeling system G-CIEMS-River (River module of Grid-Catchment Integrated Environmental Modeling System), which is a geo-referenced environmental fate model based on the river-networking structure on geographical information system (GIS) . The G-CIEMS-River model consists of two types of model: the dilution and the decay types. These models can calculate concentrations in river water and the concentrations in the particulate-bound phase of water and sediment, at the river-segment resolution. Preliminary validation was performed on the Shinano River basin in Japan, with the herbicide molinate as the test compound. The study showed that the models have the basic ability to calculate the concentration and distribution of pollutants in the river on GIS environment. The results of Shinano River basin were discussed in terms of the geographical variability of the chemicals for the basin-wide assessment of the river water environment. The geo-referenced river model can be a useful tool providing information on the spatial distribution of chemicals at the basin to national scale.
