There are ca. 70 golf links are gathered together at narrow space just behind Kobe in Hyogo Prefecture. Improper use of pesticide sometimes may cause serious water quality problems. The effluent from these golf links run into three upstream of rivers, Kakogawa, Mukogawa, and Inagawa and may contaminate municipal water supply.
Pesticides in river water are monitored at ten monitoring points of these river during the most application season, April and October. About a hundred golf links' effluent are also monitored during the application season.
Pesticides are analyzed by gas chromatography/mass spectrometry (GC/MS) with selected ion monitoring for 26 different pesticides.
High level of flutolanil, isoprothiolane, and simazine are detected in almost all runoff from golf links, and their maximum levels are over ten ppb.
Large amount of insecticide are used in summer, but insecticide are seldom found in run-off from golf links because of their characteristics.
After the rain falling, the level of pesticides in effluent increase rapidly.
In the river water, fungicides and herbicides are detected, but insecticides are hardly detected even in tributary close to links.
Pesticide loading into river water depend upon management practices, climate, and pesticide physico-chemical properties such as persistency, solubility, volatility, and adsorptivity to soil.
