The analgesic and anti-inflammatory effects and safety of a 0.15% benzydamine gargle preparation (NIK-237) were studied in 87 patients with various kinds of oral mucosal diseases. The following results were obtained:<BR>1) The overall improvement rating indicated that 40.2% were "moderately improved" and that 79.3% were "slightly effective." Relatively high improvement ratings were observed for chronic recurrent aphtha, erosive or ulcerative stomatitis and viral stomatitis.<BR>2) Side effects were observed in 13 patients (14.9%), in which 12 cases complained of numbness in the oral cavity and 1 complained of nausea immediately after gargling. No abnormality was recognized in the oral mucosa upon inspection and no systemic symptoms caused by gargling were observed.<BR>3) For the usefulness rating, "fairly useful" was judged to be 36.8% and "slightly useful" 77%. High usefulness was recognized for chronic recurrent aphtha, erosive or ulcera-tive stomatitis and viral stomatitis.<BR>4) An improved rating for the respective items way relatively high for pain during palpation and eating, and burning pain. Furthermore, when comparing "evaluation through whole day" and "evaluation immediately after drug administration, " the latter tended to be superior. The patients impression was also better in the latter.
