Bacteriological studies were carried out in the field of oral and maxillofacial surgery. One hundred and ninety eight strains were isolated from the pus of closed abscesses in 88 patients with odontogenic infections. Their susceptibilities to Ofloxacin (OFLX), Ciprofloxacin (CPFX), Ampicillin (ABPC), Erythromycin (EM) and Cephalexin (CEX) weredetermined. The results obtained were as follows:
1) Peptostreptococcus spp., α-Streptococcus and anaerobic streptococci were isolated in high frequency and these 3 strains occupied 67.7% of all the strains.
2) The isolated percentage of aerobes and anaerobes was 42.4% and 57.6%, respectively, and anaerobes were isolated from 78 out of 88 patients. These results suggest the important role of anaerobes in odontogenic infections.
3) As a whole, ABPC exhibited strong antibacterial activities. OFLX and CPFX inhibited the growth of almost all the strains at a concentration of less than 6.25μg/ml. Though EM showed good antibacterial activity, some highly resistant Peptostreptococcus spp. and anaerobic streptococci were isolated. CEX had lower activity compared with the other 4 drugs.
