Cefotetan, a long-acting cephalosporin, was administered to 29 cases to prevent postoperative infection in lesions of oral surgery. The patients were given the antibiotics just before or after the operation, and then they were given for 4 to 15 days daily. The patients were divided into 2 groups. Group A was administered once a day, and group B was administered twice a day. The following results were obtained from the fundamental and clinical studies.
1) Clinically, no postoperative infection was seen in any of the cases, and there were no significant differences in the clinical courses of wound healing between group A and B.
2) One patient got fever and skin rashes, which were thought to be side effects of CTT.
3) Serum and tissue concentration were measured in 6 cases. This revealed dose response to a high concentration over a long period.
4) Summarizing the above results, CTT was considered to be effective and safe for preventing postoperative infection in lesions of oral surgery, and we could say administering CTT once a day was as effective as twice a day.
