Waste oil, such as waste engine oil, the leftover oil from tanker ships is usually of a high viscosity, low quality and includes water. The recycling and effective use of waste materials are regarded as very important from resources saving view point. The purpose of this study was to develop a waste oil com-bustion burner, which is able to atomize high viscous waste oil using low energy and is able to reduce pollutant emissions. The waste oil combustion burner consists of an internal mixing twin-fluid atomizer and a flame holder. We investigated the effects of geometric shapes of atomizer and flame holders on the combustion characteristics of waste oil. The results indicated that high effective and stable combustion of waste oil were achieved with low energy. Moreover, the flame is mainly luminous, blow-off of the flame takes place hardly, smoke emission is little and simultaneously reduction of NOx and CO exhaust emissions was achieved independent of the fuel mass flow rate under low atomizing air mass flow rate.
