When the steel surfaces wetted with water are lubricated by satur-ated fatty acid, it has been found that the water molecules on the steel surfaces are displaced gradually by fatty acid molecules as number of measurements or mec-hanical agitation increases. This phenomenon is likely to be related to the rust preventive action of oils.<BR>The frictional behaviors of, saturated fatty acids are invesigated from room temp-erature to higher temperatures, and the transition temperature is obtained. The hysteresis found in the measurements of the coefficient of kinematic friction is considered to be due to that the reorientation of fatty acid molecules are disturbed by the thermal and mechanical agitation.Furthermore, static frictional behavior of fatty acid series is about the same as observed in kinematic conditions.
