A total of 16 disinfectants were examined for bactericidal effect against Klebsiella pneumoniae, capsule type 1, isolated from a mare with chronic metritis, to find disinfectants suitable for controlling the spread of this type among horses in Japan. Organisms of this type in distilled water were inactivated by the conventionally used concentrations of all the disinfectants, except four which were saponated cresol solution, isopropyl alcohol, mercurochrome and diluted tincture of iodine. In general, Hilite, a chlorine disinfectant, was the most effective of all. Iodine preparations, chlorhexidine and anionic soap were effective disinfectants for the equine body, chlorine products for the stable, and an orthodichlorobenzene preparation was for the door mat of the stable. All the disinfectants decreased more markedly in bactericidal effect when placed in the vaginal exudate than in distilled water. Most of them increased in this effect against the organism by heating, but decreased gradually in the effect with an increase in the number of bacteria inoculated.
