The aerodynamics of the automotive vehicle is of vital importance.Recently, a wind tunnel designed for testing full-scale road vehicles was completed by MAZDA. This introduction outlines the specifications of the new build wind tunnel and the results of its performance test. This wind tunnel is of the closed circuit type and has an 8m-diameter low noise type fan which is driven by a 1600 kw d. c. motor. The contraction ratio is 6: 1. A wide range of wind velocity, 10-230 km/h, has also been achieved. The reduction in energy consumption and noise level has also been realized in this facility. The test section has not only a 6-components balance and a free roller mounted flush with the floor, but also a traverse unit. By using this traverse system which was introduced first among other automotive wind tunnels, the measurement of the flow velocity and pressure around testing vehicles is possible in arbitrary positions. A computerized automatic measuring and data processing system which has been installed in this wind tunnel, provides high efficiency testing. It has been found from the results of the performance test that both pressure and velocity at the inlet of the test section are distributed uniformly and low turbulent intensity distribution is achieved. The noise level of the test section is low enough to perform the aerodynamic wind noise test. Consequently, the wind tunnel introduced here, will be a powerful tool in the further development of aerodynamic engineering.
