Comfortable sleep is influenced by the pillow. Therefore, we studied a pillow from the viewpoint of the head pressure distribution. We measured this quantity under the conditions of various pillow heights (3cm, 7cm, and 11 cm) and various pillow materials (polyurethane foam, buckwheat chaff, feather, and water) . We also searched the relationship between the level of comfort pillow offered to subjects and the head pressure distribution. We used a pressure sensitive film and a strain gauge sensor for the head pressure distribution measurement. The results were as follows:
1) Even if any type of sensor was used, the static pressure distribution could be taken.
2) Regarding the head pressure distribution over the polyurethane foam pillow, a large amount of pressure was distributed over a narrow range.
3) The strain gauge sensor was effective for registering pressure changes that followed movement of the head.
4) The water pillow did not show the change of pressure distribution that followed movement of the head.
5) It is possible to conclude that the pillow designated most comfortable is one which offers an even pressure distribution, so that pressure is not centered on the range, and the distribution of pressure changes to follow movement of the head.
