The present study investigated functional differences between two types of swallowing: swallowing water held in the mouth (SW-mouth) and forced, repetitive swallowing of water (75ml) from a glass (SW-glass). We measured the average bolus volume of water for a single swallow and the interval of swallowing in six non-dysphagic subjects. The interval was estimated in the EMG of the Suprahyoid muscles by measuring the difference between two peaks of the rectified and low-pass filtered EMGs. Bolus volume of water for a single swallow was significantly smaller and the interval was shorter in the SW-glass than in the SW-mouth: volume, 17.6ml for SW-glass and 38.8ml for SW-mouth; interval, 928ms for SW-glass and 1, 041ms for SW-mouth. These findings suggest that SW-glass and SW-mouth are fundamentally different in terms of interval and bolus volume of a single swallow.
