It is well known that Merkel cells are sensory cells located mainly in the palate and lip, and sometimes observed in the buccal mucosa, tongue and gingiva. However, there are only a few reports on these cells in relation to oral mucosal lesions. In this study, the coverling mucosa of both fibrous polyp and fibroma, papilloma, lichen planus, leukoplakia, epithelial dysplasia, squamous cell carcinoma and Merkel cell carcinoma were studied using immunohistochemical staining with CK20, which is a marker for Merkel cells. Normal oral epithelium was also investigated as a control. Proliferation of Merkel cells in the rete ridge of inflamed mucosa was observed, and this suggested that these cells accelerate the healing of oral mucosa. However, there is no relationship between oral mucosal lesions and Merkel cells except Merkel cell carcinoma.
