Morphological changes of brush cells in the main excretory ducts of submandibular glands of rats were studied using transmission and scanning electron microscopes following the stimulation of salivary secretion with isoproterenol. No morphological differences between brush cells in normal rat, which has been reported by many authors, and experimental rats at 0-120 minutes after administration of isoproterenol were present. However, at 180-300 minutes after administration of isoproterenol, all brush cells contained many vesicles, and the well-developed rough surface endoplasmic reticulum in the brush cells became less lamellar. In addition, several microvilli of the brush cells at 300 minutes after administration of isoproterenol were longer than that of normal rats. Nerve endings in the intercellular spaces of the epithelium were not observed in the present study. From our observations, it seemd that morphological changes of brush cells occured by alteration of salivary following administration of isoproterenol.
