The representation of the oro-facial region in the first somatosensory cortex (SI) was studied in eight awake cats by recording single neuronal activity. Five hundreds forty-nine neurons were identified with the submodality preferences and the receptive field in areas 3a and 3b. Orofacial neurons in areas 3a and 3b received inputs from intraoral cavity (29. 1%), facial region (70. 3%), and both of intraoral and facial regions (0. 5%). In area 3a, 58% of intraoral and 31% of facial neurons were deep types: neurons responding to mechanical stimuli of tapping and strong pressing, and neurons of periodontal, temporomandibular joint (tmj) and muscle types. In area 3b, 76% of intraoral and 79% of facial neurons were superficial type: neurons responding to mechanical stimuli applied to hair bending and light touch.<BR>Representations of intraoral neurons were mainly found on the rostral area of the coronal bank in area 3a and on the ventral area of the coronal gyrus in area 3b. Representations of facial neurons were mainly observed in area 3b. The overlapping areas were found between the intraoral and the facial projection areas. Each projection area of intraoral and facial regions showed the representations with the complex overlapping in the 3a-3b border and in the ventral area of the coronal gyrus in area 3b. There were intermingling of tongue and perioral neurons on the overlapping area in the 3a-3h border, and torgue and nasal neurons on the ventral area in area 3b. These findings suggested that intermingling of intraoral and facial neurons might display the functional representation in performance of the complex movements of oro-facial behaviors.
