Histological studies on the formation of the interincisive suture and the mandible symphysis of mouse.

Formations of the interincisive suture (IiS) and the mandibular symphysis (MnS) in mice were studied histologically.<BR>The mice (C57BL/6Sr Sic) used in this study ranged from 16days fetal age to 180 days after birth. Samples included both the anterior portions of the palate and the mandibles of the mice. After fixation with Bouin's solution, the samples at each age were decalcified, dehydrated, embedded in paraffin and sectioned sagittally, coronally and horizontally. Serial paraffin sections were stained with HE, Azan, silver impregnation and toluidine blue before being observed under a light microscope.<BR>The IiS was formed in four steps; The first step was the cell aggregation between right and left premaxillae (1day after birth). The second step was the formation of collagen fiber bundles (4 and 7days after birth). The third step was modifying the orientation of these fiber bundles (14days after birth). The fourth step was the formation of the fibrocartilage (21, 28, 60 and 180 days after birth). The MnS was formed in three steps; The first step was connecting the right and left mandibles using both the rostral process of the Meckel's cartilage and the cartilage of the anterior margin of each mandible (1 day after birth). These cartilages indicated metachromasia with toluidine blue staining. The second step was the formation of the connective tissues at the anterior superior portion of the MnS (4, 7 and 14 days after birth). The third step was the orange G positive reaction of the matrix of the MnS in Azan staining (21, 28, 60 and 180 days after birth).<BR>Morphologies of the IiS and the MnS seemed to correspond to the occlusal stress of the incisors in the upper and lower jaws.
