The purpose of this study was to evaluate antibotics effective for periodontopathic bacteria as chemotherapeutic agents for periodontitis.
Antimicrobial activities of 102 antibiotics (25 Penicillins, 26 Chephalosporins, 7 Tetracyclines, 9 Macrolides, 2 Lincomycins, 18 Aminoglycosides, Chloramphenicol, Rifampicin and 13 other antibiotics) were evaluated by determining minimal inhibitory concentrations against 6 periodontopathic bacterial species using Wilkins-Chalgren agar dilution methods.
Actinobacillus actinomycetemcomitans were very sensitive to Tetracyclines and chloramphenicol. Bacteroides gingivalis, B. intermedius, B. melaninogenicus ss melaninogenicus and Fusobacterium nucleatum were strongly inhibited by Penicillins, Cephalosporins, Tetracyclines and Lincomycins. Capnocytophaga species were also strongly inhibited by Macrolides as well as by the antibiotics described above. Penicillin G was the most effective antibiotic among Penicillins, minocycline among Tetracyclines, and clindamycin among Lincomycins. But Aminoglycosides were not effective for any bacterial species tested in this study.
Minocycline possessing both strong and broad antimicrobial activities against periodontopathic bacteria seems to be the most suitable antibiotic for the treatment of periodontitis.
