Cell membrane proteins of Gram-negative rods solubilized with sodium lauryl sarcosinate (Sarkosyl) were compared by sodium dodecyl sulfate-polyacrylamide gel electrophoresis. The patterns obtained from the species of Bacteroides were different each other, and that was also so in Fusobacterium. Two strains of B. asaccharolyticus, three strains of F. nucleatum and two strains of F. varium showed different electrophoretic patterns. On the other hand, the patterns from H. actinomycetemcomitans and C. ochracea were similar within each strain, the pattern from Bacteroides asaccharolyticus ATCC 25260 was found to be similar to that from C. ochracea, however. These results indicate that it is difficult to utilize this method to identify the Bacteroides, Fusobacterium and C. ochracea stralns.
