Three types of epithelial cells were distinguished in the filiform papilla of the hamster tongue on the basis of their patterns of lectin staining and ultrastructural appearance. (1) The basal cells in the anterior portion of the filiform papilla, which were stained with both PNA and UEA-I, appeared to differentiate into granular cells with heterogeneous keratohyalin glanules (KHGs), and then into superficial cornified cells overlying the anterior concave surface of the papilla. (2) The basal cells in the central portion, which were stained with UEA-I but not with PNA, apparently differentiated into cells with no KHGs, and then into cornified cells overlying the central portion bearing a spine. (3) The basal cells in the postero-lateral portion, which were stained with PNA but not with UEA-I, differentiated into granular cells with homogeneous KHGs, and then into cornified cells overlying the postero-lateral convex surface. These differences in cell surface glycoconjugates may be related to the differentiation of basal cells along individual lines of cell flow.
