Effects of the incisor-amputation on the emotional behavior of rats were studied using an open-field method. The lower incisors of non-anesthetized rats were amputated at the gingival margin with pliers, and a sham group was pinched in the same position. Spontaneous locomotor activity decreased in the amputated (amp) group, when compared with sham group, 3-12 h after amputation. Preening, as an index of emotional stability, was changed immediately after, and 24 h after amputation. Rearing, as an index of exploratory behavior, was changed in the amp group at 6-24 h. Urination and defecation, and signs of fear, were not affected by the procedure. But, start latency was prolonged in the amp group when compared with sham group within 3 h. The results obtained here indicate that emotional changes in amp group showed a complex time-dependency and were quite different from the depression caused by chemical irritants.
