A number of articles on the frequency of three-rooted mandibular first molars in various races has been reported. Among a total of 207 specimens of mandibular first molars from collection of extracted teeth which were kept at The University of Iwate Medical School of Dentistry 47 were found to have three roots. An attempt was made to find a correlation between their anatomical characteristics (occlusal form, occlusal area and root form) and the number of roots.
The results of this survey are as follows.
1. In this study of 207 extracted mandibular first molars, a frequency of 22.71±7.51% having three roots was recorded.
2. If the length of the distal root of these teeth is taken to be 100, the relative length of the disto-lingual root are about equal in size (87.83).
3. In three-rooted mandibular first molars, the area of the disto-lingual cusp is larger than the two-rooted mandibular first molar.
4. On the traits of crown shape, there are no differences between three-rooted mandibular first molar and two-rooted mandibular first molars.
