The parotid gland of adult and postnatal developing mouse were studied by use of a transmission electron microscope. Single cilia were observed in myoepitelial cells and fibroblasts in the interstitial connective tissue of adult and immature mouse, and intercalated duct cells, basal ductal cells and inner layer ductal cells of immature mouse.
The single cilia of myoepithelial cells, fibroblasts and basal ductal cells were shown to be 2-3 μm in length and about 0.25 μm in diameter of the proximal region. The basal structures of these were two centriol type and the microtuble arrangements were 9+0 pattern. It was suggested that each microtuble has a different length and rearranged in the cilium, as in the distal portion of them, a few microtubles were shifted from peripheral to central and the microtubles decreased in number.
In the intercalated duct cells of immature mouse, the single cilia was observed to be of two centriol type, but we did not find their longitudinal and cross sections.
Inner ductal cells had very short cilia. The single cilia of only this type did not have a ciliary sheath.
