To detect the subpopulation or subset of immunecompetent cells which specifically react with oral bacterial antigens, it is most significant to clarify the correlation of immune reaction to periodontal diseases. But the method is very difficult because of lack of the precise technique to demonstrate cells which react with the antigens.<BR>In this study, the above problem was solved by a direct fluorescent antigen technique utilizing the membrane dialysis method. The FITC conjugation of a soluble antigen obtained from the mixture of Actinomyces naeslundii and A. viscosus showed an affinity with immunecompetent cells as small lymphocytes or plasma cells and a part of the inflammatory exudate in the inflamed human gingivae. The method was convenient and the results were high specific. Consequently, it was concluded that this membrane dialysis method was usefull for prospective serious immunopathological studies of periodontal diseases.
