In the hypertrophic layer of the mandibular condyle in the rat underdevelopment, the chondrocyte lacuna shows great enlargement along with a swelling of chondrocytes and the longitudinal septum becomes strand-shaped and calcified. As a part of the scanning electron microscopic investigations on calcified cartilage matrix, changes in the ultrastructures induced by the calcification of cartilage matrix were observed in the developing mandibular condyles of SD-strain rats, with the following results: Whereas the wall of the chondrocyte lacuna in the upper part of the hypertrophic layer was formed of dense networks of collagen fibrils and longitudinal septum formed by reticular collagen fibrils coursing parallel to it, the chondrocyte lacunar wall in the middle part of the hypertrophic layer was studded with spherical structures of 0.5-1 e in diameter showing the process of formation of calcospherites. The surface of the spherical structure was formed with dense networks of collagen fibrils but the longitudinal septum was already calcified. The chondrocyte lacunar wall in the lower part of the hypertrophic layer was made up of numerous calcospherites of 1.5-3μ in in diameter. Whereas the surface of these calcospherites was a dense network of collagen fibrils, its central part was already calcified, and the longitudinal septum was formed of calcified compact matrix.
