The developing enamel surface and Tomes' processes were examined with a scanning electronmicroscope (SEM), using both mechanical dissection and resin replica methods. Tomes'processesof the ameloblasts showed various damages. The enamel surface directly observed by SEM revealeddepressions. Some of these depressions, however, contained remnant of Tomes' processes and the deepportions of the depressions appeared dark and unclear. Clean images of the enamel surface were obtained by using the resin replica method. The depressions in the enamel surface appeared as protrusionsin the replica methed.<BR>The three demensional morphology of the protrusions, corresponding structure to the Tomes' processes, consisted of two different faces a curved face standing up from the base of the resin replicaobliquely and cylindrically, and a flat face which also stood up from the base and intersected witha curved face so as to cut the cylinder perpendicularly. Outlines of the flat faces appeaced as a headof a paddle in the monkey, and as a fan in kitten. Nearly regular arrangement and orientation of these protrusions were observed in both species, where the pattern was type III described by Boyde. In addition, the arrangement and orientation of the protrusions often showed irregularities, especiallyat the curved enamel surface. In such areas, type II or irregular pattern was observed. Furthermoresome irregularly shaped protrusions were characteristically observed in this area.
