A scanning electron microscopic study of a clinically normal inner (dental surface) epithelium of the gingiva has been carried out in order to make clear its specific function morphologicallyas an index of the fact that leukocytes are contained in the tissue fluid.<BR>The inner epithelium consists of the sulcular epithelium and the epithelial attachment.<BR>The surface of the former was in general smooth and there were two different appearances onthe cell surface. That is, one was the microvilli and the other was the microplication. And onthe surface there were in some places small holes (size: few microns) open to the gingival sulcusand leukocytes were often observed there. On the other hand the surface of the latter had innumerable, minute and shallow halls, different from the sulcular epithelium and appeared just likea pitted surface. On the tooth stripped of the latter minute projections which seem to belong tothe enamel cuticule were observed.<BR>The middle layer resulting from stripping the latter was covered by many cytoplasmic projections.But around these projections there were shallow grooves, which were observed not onlyaround the cells but on the surface of the cells and formed network. In the confluence of thesegrooves there were small holes connected to a deeper layer. That is, these grooves form the continuouschannels from the small holes of the cell surface to those of the basal cell layer. Andleukocytes were observed within a widely dilated channels in some places.<BR>By the use of the scanning electron microscope the basal lamina was observed to exist as anamorphous sheet and small holes connected to the connective tissue were observed there too.
