The clinical outcome of rhinologic diseases in 63 patients (48 male, 15 female) with ophthalmologic complications treated at Kagawa Medical University Hospital between October 1983 to September 1999 were analyzed. Average patient age was 47.7 years. The most common ophthalmologic symptoms were visual disturbance (38 cases) and diplopia (30 cases). Most patients came to the department of ophthalmology first. The most common causes of the ophthalmologic complications were postoperative paranasal sinus cysts (41 cases), primary paranasal sinus cysts (9 cases), and blow-out fractures (5 cases). Visual acuity was evaluated in 36 of the 63 patients. 24 patients had visual disturbance in 36 patients. 16 patients recovered visual acuity after surgery in 24 patients, whereas 8 patients did not recovered after surgery. The average interval between symptom onset and surgery was 9.3 days in the recovery group and 23.5 days in the no-recovery group.
