Acoustic rhinometry is a new method for evaluating the geometrical distribution of the cross-sectional area of the nasal cavity as an area-distance curve (A-D curve). In this study, we analyzed the changes in A-D curve, nasal resistance and sensation of nasal obstruction induced by changes in the posture of the subjects. The experiments were performed with normal adult volunteers (11 male and 2 female). After 15 minutes of rest in the sitting position, the subjects were instructed to change their posture at regular intemvals (20min) to induce the modification of nasal patency. Using acoustic rhinometry (NADAR, Aarhus University, Denmark), we recorded the A-D curve every 5 minutes. Using a Rhinoconductancemeter (SR-10, RION), we also recorded the nasal resistance by anterior rhinomanometry every 5 minutes. The sensation of nasal obstruction was estimated by the visual-analog scale (VAS) at each A-D curve and nasal resistance recording. The nasal resistance of the subjects was significantly correlated with the middle part (from 4.0-6.0cm posterior from the nostril) of the nasal volume (p<0.001). The VAS of nasal obstruction mildly correlated with the minimum cross-rectional area and middle part of the nasal volume. These results suggested that not only the minimum cross-rectional area and total nasal volume but also a part of nasal volume (the middle part) are important for evaluating nasal patency using acoustic rhinometry.
