The molecular sieve properties and porous structure have been studied for molecular sieving carbon prepared from Saran waste. The Saran char was granulated into sphere, whose diameter being 0.7 mm, by the addition of 23.1 wt % of coal tar pitch and 7.5 wt % of microcrystalline cellulose. Then spherical pellets were heat-treated in a stream of nitrogen.<BR>It was found that the carbonization temperature of Saran had no significant effect on the adsorption properties of molecular sieving carbon in the temperature range 600-900 °C.The limiting volume of adsorption space for butane increased with increase of the heating rate of spherical pellets.Molecular sieving carbon from Saran waste adsorbed benzene (3.7 A in thickness, 7.0 A in width), while it did not adsorb isobutane (5.0 A in diameter). These results demonstrate that the pores of molecular sieving carbons are slit-shaped.
