The histopathological influence of caries and aging on the lung tissue of rats was investigated. The experimental group, bred with caries-inducing feed with high sugar content for 10 weeks, showed markedly more decayed teeth than the control group. The lungs of experimental group rats bred for a further20 months with normal feed histopathologically demonstrated bronchopneumonia. Namely, numerousinflammatory cells, bacterial colonies, secretions of the respiratory tract, focal accumulation of dust cells and foreign body giant cells were observed in the pulmonary alveoli. On the contrary, the lungs of the control group rats bred for 20 months and 10 weeks with normal feed showed only aging changes: fibrillary hypertrophy of the interalveolar septum and pleurae and emphysema. This animal experimental model proved that inapparent aspiration of oral bacteria was the cause of bacterial pneumonia.
